Is a cloud-based EHR better than a server-based EHR?

Server-based EHRs made sense when they were the only option, and they still show up in hospital systems that employ their own IT department. A 2-15 provider clinic is a different animal. There is no one on staff whose job is patching a server, and the “backup plan” is often a drive in a drawer. The system is only reachable from the machines it was installed on. The day you open a second location, or a therapist needs to finish a note from home, on-premise becomes the thing you work around.

Cloud flips those defaults: the vendor’s data center handles uptime, backups, and patching, every location shares one system, and you pay a subscription instead of buying hardware that ages. The trade is that your records live on someone else’s servers, which makes the contract the real security document. Before signing with any cloud vendor, get the export terms in writing: what leaving costs, and in what format your data comes back.
